What I Learned From Girl Develop It: Just Do It

April 14, 2017 @ 11:02 AM | Musings, Events

Girl Develop It

Girl Develop It is a nonprofit dedicated to providing affordable and judgment-free opportunities for women interested in learning web and software development. I went to a meetup and want to share my learnings.

Despite technology, there's nothing quite like networking with people at an event. I happened to stumble upon Girl Develop It (GDI) when searching for tech meetups. Turns out there's a very active chapter here in Columbus!

Just do it

I went to a GDI Code and Coffee event because I want to hone my HTML/CSS skills and eventually learn JavaScript and/or PHP or Python. There I met a front-end developer who told me at one point in her career she actually used punch cards (GASP). She taught herself HTML/CSS, JavaScript, Ruby and the list goes on, so I picked her brain about the best way for me to start learning. Her advice to me: just do it.

What she meant is that there is no right/wrong way, or right/wrong time to start learning a new programming language. Most developers I know have this attitude, which is pretty cool. She also suggested some resources for me to use:

  • Free Code Camp helps you learn to code for free AND you help nonprofits.
  • GitHub is a good platform to start a project on because you can host for free.
  • The CSS Tricks Blog is an awesome resource for front-end developers.

I'm excited to learn and get more involved in the Columbus tech community.
